As residents of Berkshire we can say that this hospital is incredible, the staff are dedicated and ensure that you are always well looked after. The day to day running of this busy hospital is a mammoth task and the sacrifice that the staff make is truly heartwarming. Often we have guests that stay with us as our hotel is near the hospital and they share their stories of their loved ones with us. Oh yes, we must mention that Catherine Middleton the wife of Prince William was born at Royal Berkshire Hospital and so was her sister!

History of Royal Berkshire Hospital

The Royal Berkshire Hospital was opened in 1839 on the London Road on land donated by Henry Addington. Who was a local resident and former Prime Minister.

A local architect and builder Henry Briant won the design competition. King William (IV) actually took a keen interest in Royal Berkshire Hospital before it had been built. His arms appear on the central pediment, unfortunately he died before the hospital opened. However his niece Queen Victoria was the first patron of the hospital.

Parking is tricky at the hospital and it doesn’t take long to walk. From the hotel turn left. Past the first bus stop turn left into Lancaster Drive. At the end of the road turn right into Allcroft Road. At the end of the road turn left into Redlands Road, here you will find the hospital.

Royal Berkshire Hospital Museum

If you want to see how medical practices have developed then it is definitely worth visiting the Royal Berkshire Hospital Museum. Which is situated within the hospital. A great place to explore if you are interested in the history of medicine, The records date back to 1837 the collection includes many hundreds of artefacts and photographs relating to medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and nursing. The museum is actually housed in the old hospital laundry which was built in 1881. There are also displays along the concourse in the Centre Block, in the foyer of the Maternity unit, the Radiology Department and also in the Trust Education Centre.
