History of Valentine
Valentine’s Day is also known as Saint Valentine’s Day – so who is Saint Valentine? There seems to be some mystery around the Saint. What we do know is that February is known as the month of romance and Saint Valentine’s day has some Christian and ancient Roman roots.
The question is how is Saint Valentine linked to this ancient rite? There are various stories being told about Saint Valentine, we will only mention one here. (The most romantic one of course!) It’s been told that Saint Valentine may have been killed as he was helping Christians escape Roman prisons.
Saint Valentine sent the first ever valentine greeting as he fell in love with his jailer’s daughter who used to visit him in prison, he wrote a letter signed ‘from your valentine’. It’s clear that there are varying stories around this legend however it is also clear that he was a hero, sympathetic and of course he was romantic.
By the middle ages Valentine actually became one of the most popular saints in France and England. And now Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world.
